Plant Propagation

Frustrated!

I have tried SO many times to propogate monstera. I've tried water, damp perlite, moss in the prop box…..heat mats, humidity is good, 160 bucks on grow lights, countless hours on Reddit threads and YouTube tutorials…..and they keep rotting!🤬
Everyone says it's so simple, but why can I not be successful???

What kind of Monstera are you propagating?

I use filtered water and leca (clay pellets) to prop mine. Keep an eye out for any mold, otherwise don’t replace the water, just add to it. You can also add a clipping of pothos, they produce their own rooting hormone.

Furthermore, you can paint the cut ends of the monstera cutting with clear nail polish to force faster root growth since it won’t be able to draw water up the stem. Anything you can do to speed up the process will improve your chances.

Don’t give up! Keep asking questions.

You can also look up some YouTube tutorials on air layering. You cut a small notch at a node, stick a toothpick in to hold the cut open, then wrap it in a handful of wet sphagnum moss and wrap that in Saran Wrap. Wait until you see roots trying to bust through! This is a more tedious process, but will yield a much stronger prop, ready to plant.
