Summer Container Garden, Patio Pots, Dahlia Companions // Cottoverdi

Today I’m planting up the patio containers that will join my patio dahlias this summer. I’m using perennials, bedding annuals and plants that I’ve grown from seed.

I will only ever recommend products that I use regularly and believe to be good value.

  1. Hi Annette, I really enjoyed your pots being filled. I know I'll probably revisit this video to get ideas for plants in the future. I've used every large pot and still need more because I am growing peppers, tomatoes, and other things, as well as flowers. My garden takes ages to tidy up each year. Thanks for the video, it was lovely as usual. X

  2. Hi Annette, great video. The heliotrope should be pinched out when the seedlings are young as antirrhinums and cosmos, but your plant looks quite bushy I think..I have a whole 'hedge' of oregano, flanking my border- just love the fragrance. I have planted up my patio pots with Setaria and coleus. I also have a Miscanthus and 4 Cannas, and balcony planters filled with begonias- loys of tropical colour.. The furniture is dark rattan so it has a quite Carribbean feel. It looks out onto my grasses circle, which has a black birdbath to the centre of it. I think the common name for Lychnis Coronaria could be rose campion? I hope to finish the pots off over the weekend. The flagstone patio is planted with Hostas, white hydrangeas , cool greens and whites as it is in shade. Happy gardening, have a great weekend 🙂 x

  3. Obedient plant gets its name from the fact that you can push the flowers around the stem and they will stay put. It is a native prairie flower where I live, and it can get quite aggressive in the garden as it spreads through rhizomes. I have it in my backyard prairie patch and it will push everything else out of if I let it, definitely not obedient in that respect.

  4. Oh I'm finally ahead of you. Pirs have been planted up for 3 weeks now and are going great guns. Petunias – deep purple, queen of hearts, glowing pink, raspberry ripple and some other freebies we got our hands on along with geraniums and pale blue lobelia — will be planting some creepingbred thym between slabs this weekend and I'm gonna order some Erigeron karvinskianus to poke in around an old wall and round the doorstep which has been overtaken by wild mallow 😮 – and those rhizomes don't come out of nooks and crannies easily. Good luck with your pots and slugs. I had an idea and it works great. Use an old paint brush and paint neat cheap washing up liquid round the bottom 6 inches on the pots. They've tried to climb up them but they recoil and fall off foaming at the mouth 🤣 and they also die. Love the video such a beautiful walled garden ❤

  5. Hi Annette.. I love calibrachoas too and last year I didnt clear out my pots and in early spring I notice some growth on what appears like twigs.. I was so surprised to see them come back.. This year I ordered more calibrachoas plugs in every colour they had.. I live in London, UK..So a heads up, dont be too hasty to clear out the pots, as they do come back if the winter is not too severe..

  6. Hi Annette..Physostegia is called obedient plant because you can actually move the single flowers in the spike and actually place them in a specific position.

  7. Your pots are going to look gorgeous Annette….love them…..looking forward to seeing them later in summer ☀️…..TFS 🌺🌺🌺👌X

  8. Love your videos ,the obedient plant you can move the flowers around on the stem face them in the direction u want and they will stay there .

  9. Good idea to put a pot in a pot. One of my favourite gardening jobs is planting up the summer containers and hanging baskets. This year has been awful for slugs and snails and like you, I've lost a lot of plants. So annoying when you've been looking after them and they get decimated overnight. Can't wait to see your containers in full bloom as they look gorgeous already..

  10. They will look absolutely gorgeous! I love the way white flowers glow in the evening. I have lots of volunteer Rose Campion (Lychnis), so you've given me the idea to pot some up. Mine seed themselves everywhere; even in the crushed granite between my patio's stone slabs!

  11. What a beautiful selection of plants, Annette! It’ll look gorgeous. Will you hook these up to drip or will you just hand water them? Also, please may I ask where you got your birdcage bird feeder from? I’ve been scouring the internet for pretty bird feeders, but haven’t found any nice ones. Would love to find one similar to yours ❤

  12. Hi Annette, At the beginning of your video, What are the pink flowers just below the White Bird feeder? Love your videos.

  13. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that your Heliotrope blooms. I had one on my patio here in Connecticut, USA and it smells wonderfully of vanilla and almonds, just like a cherry pie! Butterflies love it as well.

  14. Moss would like nice Annette , I bought some of Etsy for 8 hanging baskets and the lengths were so short I couldn’t keep the moss in place , so used at base of pots . ❤ lovely plants to look forward too x

  15. Love your pots. You mentioned something about wire something goes rampant in the garden. I have these skinny hard little worms i often find them under my pots. Do you know how to get rid of them. Please

  16. What a nightmare spring for slugs and snails this has been hasn’t it ? Many of my baby plants have been decimated in a way I’ve never seen before.
