Fake snake, that’s actually a fake elephant and a fake hawk

Seriously cool caterpillar.

I found one of these crawling across my drive yesterday. Had to look it up to find out what it was and was impressed as I don’t think I have ever seen an elephant hawk moth let alone the caterpillar.
There was no where for it to go on the driveway and it would probably have been eaten by a bird or driven over. I moved him to the garden where hopefully it can find what it needs.

You’re correct. Probably wandering to find somewhere to pupate if it’s not on a fuchsia / willowherb / etc.
You are correct.
Definitely Elephant Hawk Caterpillar
That is so cool! I’ve never seen one before, the moth is beautiful!
Apparently they overwinter as pupae so I wonder if this one is ready to change or if it’s still too early?
