Inside John Derian’s Enchanting Seaside Home in Cape Cod | Design Notes

John Derian welcomes us into his magical ‘old world’ house in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It was a rainy day in Provincetown, Massachusetts, when the designer John Derian first saw what would eventually become his house, an 18th-century Greek Revival number in the centre of town.

Built in 1789 for a sea captain who could keep on eye on happenings at sea from the front windows, the house was then extended backwards in the 19th century, which has now been transformed into a small shop for John’s dreamy homewares. As a result of this evolutionary process, there are plenty of attractive quirks to the architecture and decoration, from the faded 20th-century wallpapers to the seashell and horsehair plasterwork. Watch the full episode of ‘Design Notes’ as we tour John Derian’s seaside sanctuary.

  1. Looks derelict and likely unsafe / unhealthy. I think there’s a way to keep the historical charm while also updating the space to be livable and not a health hazard.

  2. John has fully embraced this house just as it is and in doing so has kept the history in such a unique way – fascinating ❤❤❤

  3. Oh my… what a stunning story! I'm really glad that John kept the house's old style… it's so full of "spirit", it seems to have it's own personality, with a true lifetime story. I really loved the video!

  4. I somehow found John's work and this amazing home years ago, and it was such a pleasure to watch this video and see it featured on one of my favorite magazine's youtube channel! This house is a treasure, and I'm glad you are preserving this history and showing us how incredibly gorgeous age can be.

  5. I could not spend more than 10-minutes in that home, but am very glad to know that its owner enjoys it just as it is.

  6. The most charming house I have ever seen!! this is what real talent gets you!!
A dreamy home even without costly renovations! If I lived even remotely nearby I would be John's customer to his shop and I would beg him to have a small glimpse of his home.

  7. What a stunning house. I am so pleased that you have kept everything. It speaks history and I imagine that you can sit and imagine so many events in the house. Utterly beautiful.

  8. I admire the fact he can live with the decor as is. Companies will reproduce the wallpaper… maybe he should do this while parts if the wallpaper still remain… these companies archive the patterns too. If it was me I would have to polish that place to within an inch of its life 😂😂😂 but I could never have a place like this😢😢😢) Enjoy your dreamy life… I love the delightful shop at the back. Its all so charming x

  9. Although I love John Derian's decor shop, his home is definitely not my style. All the distressed surfaces and falling apart furniture make me feel like the house needs a good cleaning and lots of renovations that preserve the historic aspects of the house but allow for hygienic considerations.

  10. Quirky, Old Timey and Chockablock full of history with dashes and dabs of his own sleight of hand;
    Most Enjoyable!

  11. I absolutely love that he didn’t do any major renovations!! So many beautiful historic homes in this country are being renovated, and they often lose the things that make them unique in the process. I have so much respect for anyone that recognizes the beauty in old homes and chooses to preserve them even if that means foregoing some modern conveniences.

  12. Keeping and restoring the best of history is time honoring, and work well worth it. But everything ages and sometimes not gracefully and torn and tattered is not style. This is a magnificent home that looks like it’s falling apart on the inside because it is. Sooner or later it will need updating or it will continue to deteriorate. Yes it can be costly but tackling one thing at a time is easier on the budget.

  13. I live in a 1790 home near Long Island Sound, and I think he'll find that the humidity is a killer and really destructive to your things. That's why the house looks a bit shabby, it's not just the age. If I were he,I'd look into finding someone who specializes in installing AC in old houses. It won't be inexpensive, but imo it's so worth it. I might at least paint some of the interior trim and keep the wallpaper but get rid of the purple floor. But there's definitely a lot of quirky charm 😊

  14. I love his house! As a lifelong Cape-goer, though, I’ve never heard of or seen the faux stone floors, though. So curious.

  15. So Old Europe style (France or England) and it is beautiful and charming. Very rare for an American man

  16. John Derian’s shop in NYC is as amazing as this house, he is totally authentic, and has created his own beautiful world, which is the most difficult thing to do. Thank you for the tour….

  17. He seems like a very nice guy, and I respect trying to keep history intact, but that looks borderline derelict

  18. I've always loved walking past this house and admiring it. I was a bit stunned at the look of the interior. The owner has amazing aesthetic taste. But, as noted by another commenter, I would not feel comfortable living with the state of decomposition that the house exudes.
