How to Pick a Paw Paw Fruit

@heppylifestyle visits the PawPaw Patch with Michael Judd & learns all about how to know when a pawpaw fruit is ready to harvest. Check out @heppylifestyle for other in-depth videos on edible landscaping.

Pawpaw produces the largest fruit indigenous to North America. Pawpaw, Asimina triloba is also spelled, Paw Paw. The fruit’s texture is like custard, and the fruit has tropical flavors. Pawpaw grow wild in over 26 U.S. States, and there are about 50 select varieties that you can grow in your yard. How to pick a Pawpaw fruit? 1. Gently squeeze the fruit. Squeeze it like you squeeze a peach. 2. Only pick fruit that is soft. RIPE Pawpaw fruit is just barely soft or softer to the touch. 3. Pick Pawpaw by twisting the fruit off or cut if off. 4. DON’T pick Pawpaw when it’s hard. Unripe fruit will not ripen on the kitchen counter like other types of fruit. You have to pick Pawpaw when the fruit is soft on the tree. *** Typically, the skin on Unripe fruit is green and skin on ripe fruit have hues of yellow with blackish splotches. According to KSU, the self-life is 2-3 days on the kitchen counter and up to 3 weeks in the fridge. In my fridge, I’m lucky to get 2 weeks. The GOOD news is that the pulp freezes very well. The pulp is the fruit without skin & seeds. And there’s some terrific Pawpaw recipes!
