Jarrariums

Help!

I’ve had this jarrarium for about 3 years I assembled it by adding potting soil then scooping some lake water. It was thriving for awhile until a few months ago. It consists of copepods and an unknown black bug that has been there done the beginning. But recently the water has turned murky and I got worried and wondered if I should purchase some food to feed or plants. But obviously the whole point of these jars are they’re not meant to be opened. I’m just wondering what should I do will they survive. There are about 50+ things in there as of now.

Looks like it got too much sunlight and you had an algae bloom. Unfortunately when all the algae eventually dies you will have a nitrogen spike and most likely an anaerobic environment.

Some people make these in such a way that they’re never to be opened, but that doesn’t really give you any ability to adjust things as needed, especially early on. As much as it’s a cool idea, some plants and a mesh lid might help some.
